M-Spin receives £25K "Access Grant" from Royce

M-Spin is delighted to have received a £25K grant from the Henry Royce Institute (Royce) to utilise the extensive equipment available at Royce’s Imperial College facility.

The grant, made via the Royce “Access Scheme”, will enable zero-cost use of world-class analytical equipment to further develop and characterise our next generation materials for batteries and electrolysers. We'll be heavy uses of the SEM, Raman, XRD and electrochemical test facilities in particular to deepen our understanding of the properties and performance of our products.

We’re excited to be partnering with Royce on this and thank them for their support.

M-Spin strengthens team

M-Spin is delighted to welcome Dr. Ian Johnson and Dr. Abi Lister to our growing team.

Ian joins us with an extensive R&D career in both industry and academia, and will serve as Head of Product Development. Following a Ph.D. at University College, London, he investigated Mg batteries during his postdoctoral appointment at Argonne National Laboratory. More recently, he developed novel 3D current collectors at a battery start-up (Addionics), and focussed on their integration into gigafactory facilities. Ian will lead M-Spin’s scale-up and manufacturing effort in his new role.

Abi joins us after completing a PhD in materials science at the University of Oxford, where she developed electrochemical methods to make porous framework materials for use in highly sensitive gas sensors. During her masters at the University of Cambridge, she investigated the interaction of carbon dioxide with framework materials. Outside academia, she has done supplier research, technology scouting, and research proposal review coordination as a consultant for academic and industrial clients. Abi is joining M-Spin as a Technologist with a focus on to preparing, analysing and developing M-Spin’s product range.

M-Spin moves into new labs

M-Spin has moved into its brand new lab at the Scale Space Incubator at White City, west London. The lab is an ideal space for us to continue the development of our ultra-high surface area metallic mats and begin pilot production.

In Q1 2025 we'll be fitting the labs out for wet chemistry and analytical work, and putting the first pilot production machines in place so that we can support trials with our initial customers and partners. While there we also benefit from access to the impressive shared facilities at Scale Space and the associated Make Space.

We're really happy to be in our new home!

M-Spin completes seed funding round

M-Spin is delighted to announce that it has closed a £1.2 million seed funding round. The round was led by Parkwalk Advisors alongside the third Imperial College Enterprise Fund (ICEF).

The investment will allow M-Spin to further optimise its ultra-high surface area metallic mat technology, establish its own bespoke labs, grow the team, and start scaling for production. M-Spin has set out an 18-month program focused on proving the performance and durability of the mats when produced in commercially relevant formats.
